The 8-week cohort for UK nurses who want to build real, NMC-aligned digital tools — using Python, Streamlit, and AI. Built by a nurse. For nurses.
Tools already built and in use by student nurses
Sound familiar?
"I have an idea for a tool that would help my patients, but I don't know where to start."
"I've tried coding tutorials but they're not about healthcare at all."
"I feel left behind as digital health accelerates. Nobody is teaching nurses to build."
"I want to contribute to NHS digital strategy but I don't have a technical background."
After 8 weeks
A live Streamlit app on Hugging Face Spaces — publicly accessible, yours to keep
A GitHub portfolio showing your clinical development work
NMC revalidation CPD evidence — documented, structured, signed off
Confidence to call yourself a Nurse Citizen Developer
The Programme
Every session is 90 minutes live, plus exercises you can complete on your NHS laptop during breaks. No special software needed.
Week One
The case for nurse citizen development. NMC Platform 4 digital competencies. Python fundamentals with clinical examples — no "Hello, World" nonsense.
📦 You build: A clinical BMI + NEWS2 score calculator
Week Two
Turn your Python script into a web app in one afternoon. Deploy it publicly. Share the link in the Discord. Feel the magic.
📦 You build: Your first live clinical web app
Week Three
OpenFDA, PubMed, RxNorm, ClinicalTrials.gov — all free, all public. How to pull live drug, research, and trial data into your tool.
📦 You build: A drug information lookup tool
Week Four
The NHS clinical safety standards that apply to digital tools. How to scope your tool appropriately. Writing disclaimers nurses actually read.
📦 You build: A safety wrapper for any clinical tool
Week Five
Map your tool to NMC Standards of Proficiency. Melnyk's hierarchy of evidence. How to cite NHS and NICE guidelines in code.
📦 You build: An evidence-graded summary card
Week Six
BYOK (bring your own key) AI features using Anthropic Claude. Prompt engineering for clinical language. What AI should and shouldn't decide.
📦 You build: An AI-assisted reflective writing tool
Week Seven
Your idea. Your clinical area. Supported 1:1 build session with Lincoln. From concept to working prototype in one week.
📦 You build: Your own original clinical tool
Week Eight
Present your tool to the cohort and invited NHS guests. Get real feedback. Publish your GitHub repo. Add it to your NMC revalidation portfolio.
🎓 You graduate: A verified Nurse Citizen Developer
NHS Nurse · Clinical Developer · Founder, CQAI
From the instructor
When I started building clinical tools, there was no course for nurses. No tutorial that started with "here's a medication safety problem" instead of "here's how to build a to-do list."
I learned by doing — by building drug cards, wound assessments, and NCLEX prep tools. Each one taught me something new. Each one helped a real student nurse.
This cohort is the course I wish I'd had. Everything is clinical-first. Every exercise uses real NHS scenarios. And by week 8, you will have shipped something real.
The NHS needs nurse builders. That could be you.

💡 NHS employers may fund this as CPD. Ask your line manager. We provide an invoice and learning outcomes letter.
No. Zero. The cohort starts from absolute scratch. If you can use Epic or SystmOne, you have enough computer literacy. Week 1 starts with "what is a variable" using medication examples.
Just a browser. We use Google Colab for Python (free, runs in the cloud) and Hugging Face Spaces for deployment (also free). No installations, no NHS IT tickets needed.
About 3–4 hours per week. One 90-minute live session, and 1–2 hours of exercises. The exercises are designed so you can do them on a laptop during a quiet patch on shift or at home.
Possibly yes. Many Trusts have CPD budgets and study days. We provide a formal invoice, a learning outcomes letter mapped to NMC Standards, and a CPD reflection template. Email us at info@nursingcitizendevelopment.com and we'll send you a letter to give your manager.
Yes. 8 weeks × 3–4 hours = approximately 30 hours of structured CPD. We provide a formal CPD log template mapped to NMC Standards of Proficiency and the Code. Each tool you build is a piece of revalidation evidence.
All sessions are recorded and shared in the Discord within 24 hours. We know nurses work shifts. The cohort is designed with that reality in mind.
The curriculum is UK-focused (NMC, NHS, NICE guidelines) but the technical skills work everywhere. International nurses are welcome. NMC revalidation benefits apply to UK registrants only.
